THE BIG MATCH: ENGLAND V ARGENTINA 2 – 1…
For the first time in a while I watched a full international football match. I just don’t dig football any more but I decided to tune into this one to see if I had missed anything…
Generally, I lost interest in football years ago and mainly because of the disappointment of an England side who regularly disappointed and regularly left fans sweating throughout their matches. It was too much too watch and I didn’t like the way football was going as a spectacle of money and theatrics rather than as a sport.
That was exactly what happened yet again yesterday evening.
I’ve watched enough football over the years before I started to tune off to know what was potentially coming with England.
England impressed in first half. They kept their defence well and structure. The Argentinians were all over the place but you just knew with an Argentina team they would wake up and show their true skills.
The England goal on 55 mins was great but after I just knew what was coming.
After the first half and the goal they did what all England teams have done before- and got complacent. They dropped back and let Argentina go on the attack. With the manager’s decision to put on fresh legs Argentina had the chance to change the tactics and put on the fresh legs. It worked.
They knew they’d get chances with an England side that get tired and complacent and the England side didn’t make the most of their goal lead by keeping the pressure on.
Argentina tried going through the middle for a period but realised it wasn’t working and switched tactics. That’s what you do in sport is switch tactics and take a gamble!
Argentina were the better side in the second half despite England scoring first!
At least we can say that England sides are now capable of reaching at least the last four in major tournaments both in Europe and in the WORLD CUP – consistently.
We need to shake off this complacency when we lead and stop dropping back and letting our opponents attack…
