Growing Values and Standards Through Okinawan Karate – The Birthplace of Karate…

Why Okinawa Fascinates Me

Japan has always fascinated me.

Recently, I’ve been researching Okinawa, and I’ve decided that sometime in the future I’m going to spend some time there. Not just for a holiday, but to experience the culture for myself. It apparently has a lot to do there. The beaches. The bonsais, the Karate. The food. And the incredible history.

One of the things I plan to do is visit a traditional karate dojo.

Okinawa is the birthplace of karate, much like Sheffield is regarded as the home of snooker. I’ve been to Sheffield a few times. Now I want to experience the birthplace of another discipline that has influenced millions of people around the world.

Meanwhile, here’s some inspiring meals for SNOOKER SUMMER WARMERS

The more I learn about traditional Okinawan karate, the more I realise it’s about far more than just fighting in tournaments.

It’s about respect.

It’s about discipline.

It’s about humility.

It’s about mastering the fundamentals before anything else. By practicing “quiet Karate.”

One person described it as leaving your ego at the door. That philosophy immediately resonated with me.

As someone who has spent years involved in snooker, I believe there are lessons here that apply far beyond martial arts. Every sport benefits when respect, good standards and strong fundamentals are placed at the heart of coaching and competition.

I’m not travelling to Okinawa to become a karate expert.

I’m travelling to learn.

To experience a different culture.

To understand a different approach to teaching and personal development.

And, of course, to explore the incredible local food, history and people that make Okinawa unique.

Every journey has the potential to change you.

From everything I’ve researched so far, Okinawa isn’t just somewhere I’d like to visit.

It’s somewhere I’d like to learn from.

Maybe I’ll see the world a little differently when I come back.
