Sports Watch 2024: Local Petanque…

A TALENTED JUNIOR Teamed up with an experienced Petanque player and Coach Frank Charlesworth over the weekend to come runners up in the Plate Cup in the Petanque Adult/Junior National Championships which were held in Oxshott, Surrey, UK.

The event was held at the Oxshott Village Sports Petanque Club at the weekend as the line-up saw the first junior entry, Robert, who partnered up with Frank Charlesworth, an experienced veteran of the game.

On the Oxshott Village Sports Club website, it read: “We held our annual Petanque Open Day the previous Saturday, and Robert and his Mum came along (they are already OVSC tennis members). Robert was a “natural”, who played incredibly well and amazed us all, so we spoke to him and his parents, and asked if he would be interested in entering this competition. Robert was very enthusiastic, so literally one week later, after one session of coaching with Frank (who very kindly offered to partner Robert), they were entrants.”

On the Petanque England Facebook page, it said that there were 14 teams who competed on Saturday at the club, and were drawn into two leagues of four from the six team group.

The Group added: “The competition was intense and the quality of play excellent. Some of the top adult players in PE supported the event and to see them interacting with their junior partners, discussing the next shots, was what the competition is all about.”

“The facilities at Oxshott were excellent.”

UK Coaching Week which begins in a few day’s time on the 29th April – 5th May, is an opportunity for people across ALL sports to say #ThanksCoach.

The aim of UK Coaching Week this year is Holistic coaching and is about developing the whole person.

It goes beyond sporting experience, serving as a key to unlocking potential and helping to shape individuals into well-rounded, successful, and resilient people, both on and off the field.

It transforms lives!

The UK Coaching Week website adds this…

“This is more than just a thank you; it’s a celebration of the invaluable life skills that coaches impart and the transformative positive impact that they have on those they guide and support.”

It only took one lesson for Robert to pick up the Petanque sport and the signs of a good coach in Frank, so I’m sure Robert and many others will be saying to Frank #ThanksCoach…

In Snooker, this website writer has interviewed many coaches from the likes of Brian Cox, to Nic Barrow, currently working with Ronnie O’Sullivan. Brian Cox has also coached Jimmy White to keep his tour going.

UK Coaching Week is a chance to say a thankyou to all the snooker coaches out there who have helped develop players and give players of all abilities the chance to enjoy the sport they have chosen to play as either recreational or develop further aspirations to see how far they can go or to just play in local leagues or local tournaments.
